Varkala


Varkala is a globally known beach destination. The beach in Varkala is unique because it is the only beach on the Arabian Sea with cliffs. The famous and ancient Janardhanaswamy Temple, which dates back to more than 2000 years, is on the beachside. This temple is also known as Dakshin Kashi and is a very important destination for Vaishnavites.


The sea facing the temple is known as Papanasini and it is believed that bathing there can wash away all past sins.





The sea off Varkala is very calm and conducive to swimming and snorkeling as also surfing. The beaches are stretches of golden sands and ideal for sunbathing. There are mineral springs at the base of the cliffs and these are very medicinal in content. But there is more to VARKALA than sun-n-sand.


The other big spiritual presence is the Sivagiri Mutt associated with name of the renowned saint and social reformer Sri Narayana Guru.



There is also the Anjengo fort, Kappil Lake, Varkala Tunnel, Light House and Golden Island to cater to your wanderlust.

          How to reach:

  • From Trivandrum International airport it is just 1-hour drive. Drive on the Trivandrum-Kochi Highway, take a left turn from Kallambalam junction and Varkala is just 3kms ahead.



  • From Cochin international airport it is 4 hours and 30 minutes drive. On the Kochi-Trivandrum Highway, take a left turn as you reach Kallambalam, and Varkala is just 3 kms ahead.



  • From Varkala railway station 10 minutes drive.
